Both gravity and evaporation are

matrix when rainfall is scarce. Left unchecked this
damage can cause wilting, browning and loss of leaves,

Watering soil in this condition is wasteful as the water
tends to run away through voids in the soil matrix resulting
in poor soil absorption. Consequently this moisture
offers little real benefit to plants and can result
